BELLE-BAIE (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments are investing more than $7 million to create 62 housing units in Bathurst.
“We know the need for housing is urgent in our province, especially in the
Chaleur region,” said David Hickey, minister responsible for the New Brunswick Housing Corporation. “Having a safe and stable place to call home is essential to leading a productive life, and I am so pleased to partner with our federal colleagues, and our community partners, to bring these projects to fruition.”The Advantage Apartments project, at 275 King Ave., involves converting office space into 18 one-bedroom units.
Projet Assomption, at 2144 Vallée Lourdes Dr., will turn a former convent into 44 housing units, half of which will be for people aged 55 and over. The project will include common space and a cafeteria for tenants.
Both projects are expected to be completed this spring. Thirty-one of the new units will be supported by rental supplements from the New Brunswick Housing Corporation.
“We warmly thank the Town of Belle-Baie and the City of Bathurst, as well as all our partners – provincial, municipal, community and private – whose collaboration has made these initiatives possible,” said Acadie-Bathurst MP Serge Cormier. “Together, we are building a future where every family and every individual can find a safe and welcoming place to call home.”
Cormier attended for federal Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Nathaniel Erskine-Smith.
The New Brunswick Housing Corporation is investing more than $2.4 million in the projects, while the federal government is contributing more than $4.7 million.
Helping build more affordable housing is one of several initiatives undertaken by the corporation to address the province’s housing needs.
