The Honourable David McGuinty, Minister of National Defence, and the Honourable Jill McKnight, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, have issued the following statement:
“Today, we honour the Canadians who helped defend the United Kingdom during one of the
defining air campaigns of the Second World War.Fought from July 10 to October 31, 1940, the Battle of Britain was the Royal Canadian Air Force’s first air combat of the Second World War, and a moment when Canada chose to stand with its allies against the threat of invasion.
Canadians served in both Royal Air Force (RAF) squadrons and No.1 (Canadian) Squadron, later renamed 401 squadron. More than 100 Canadian pilots and an estimated 300 Canadian groundcrew participated in the battle. Twenty-three Canadian pilots paid the ultimate sacrifice during the battle.
On this day, we commemorate the veterans of all nations who took part in this crucial battle, and all those who have served throughout our aviation history in times of peace and conflict."
