Fish for Sale: A History of Commercial Fishing on Great Slave Lake New exhibit coming to the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre

Yellowknife — September 16, 2025

History buffs and culture enthusiasts, take note! A new exhibit is coming soon to the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre (PWNHC).

Check out Fish for Sale: A History of Commercial Fishing on Great Slave Lake, which kicks off with an exhibit opening event at the PWNHC on Saturday September 27, 2025, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. The event begins in the Museum Café with complimentary Great Slave Lake fish followed by introductory remarks from Community Curator Fran Hurcomb in the museum auditorium and an outdoor fish fry. In-person interpretation of the exhibit will be available in the adjacent gallery throughout the event.

As a reliable, year-round source of food, fish have always been a staple for Indigenous peoples who call the Big Lake home. A commercial fishery was introduced in the late 1940s, transforming the harvesting of Great Slave Lake’s fish. The fishery allowed for sale of fish to local markets and opened up export opportunities around the world. Today, the important traditions of harvesting and preserving fish are kept alive by Indigenous communities and commercial fishers around Great Slave Lake.

You can visit the exhibit, which is a partnership with the Hay River Heritage Centre, starting September 28, 2025 and continuing onward, open Tuesdays to Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
