Statement from Minister Streicker on the official launch of the Kluane First Nation wind project

Canada - Minister responsible for Yukon Development Corporation John Streicker has issued the following statement:

“Last week, I was excited to join the Kluane First Nation to celebrate the official launch of their Lhu'ààn Mân N'tsi wind project. This First Nations-owned wind turbine system will provide clean, renewable energy to Burwash Landing and Destruction Bay for years to come.

“This project demonstrates the power of smart, low-carbon energy solutions. The modern wind turbine, battery energy storage and micro-grid control system will reduce diesel

consumption in the community by over 300,000 litres per year. Thanks to this project, the Kluane First Nation has already started to turn down its diesel generator.

“The Government of Yukon is proud to have invested $2 million in this community-led project that contributes to the Our Clean Future targets. The Yukon Development Corporation and the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources have funded several projects to reduce diesel consumption in off-grid communities, including the Beaver Creek Saa Se Solar project, the Old Crow Solar project and the Lhu'ààn Mân N'tsi wind project.

“We would like to acknowledge the significant contribution of the Government of Canada towards this renewable energy initiative. We are showing what can be accomplished when First Nations, federal and territorial governments work together towards a clean future.”
