Calgary, Canada - On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Mayor Jyoti Gondek, Councillor Raj Dhaliwal, Fire Chief Steve Dongworth and community residents celebrated the opening of a new multi-service development in the community of Cornerstone. Phase one, with a budget of $16.8 million, includes a fire station and a Household Hazardous Waste drop-off location. A future phase will include non-market housing.
The two-bay Cornerstone Fire Station replaces the nearby temporary one-bay Skyview Fire Station and represents a significant milestone in The City of Calgary’s ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and accommodate the expanding needs of our city.
"The Cornerstone Multi-Service Development reflects our commitment to integrated civic
facility planning and our dedication to serving Calgarians where they live,” said Mayor Jyoti Gondek. Whether responding to emergencies, improving infrastructure, or providing vital resources, we’re here for Calgary, ready to serve and protect, ready to care, and always working to make a difference.”Like many other City developments, this site seeks to bring multiple services to together on a single site to use land efficiently and maximize service delivery to Calgarians.
- The new fire station will provide emergency services to Cornerstone and surrounding communities and replace the temporary Skyview Fire Station, which will be taken out of service when the new station goes into service on September 24.
- A new Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off location will help the community dispose of corrosive, flammable, poisonous or explosive items safely.
- While non-market housing is currently planned for the site, this portion of this project is currently unfunded, meaning that there are no immediate plans for development. The City is also exploring the option of selling land to a non-market third-party housing provider to advance this phase. Timing will be determined as funding and partnership opportunities become available.
Building multi-service facilities and sites on City-owned land allows The City to use investment and partnerships efficiently to provide more services from one location. It also enables The City to collaborate to build facilities and sites that reflect thriving and evolving neighborhoods.
“Multi-service developments are fiscally responsible and reduce the overall cost of new facilities by delivering more than one service on a site,” said Councillor Raj Dhaliwal. “This aligns with Council's direction to identify more efficient land use opportunities, build fewer corporate sites, and reduce operating costs. From safer streets and emergency response to community-driven programs, we’re working together to build a city where everyone feels secure and supported—today and for the future.”
The multi-service development aims to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification, underscoring the commitment to The City’s Sustainable Building Policy.
The fire station features advanced air quality ventilation designed with low-emitting building materials. Some features in the fire station, such as improved acoustic separation between active and living areas and indoor environment controls related to lighting, daylighting and thermal comfort have been included to support firefighters’ health and wellness.
“Cornerstone Fire Station will support Calgarians by enabling the Calgary Fire Department to improve response times and ensure we can continue to meet the demand for services for Cornerstone and surrounding communities,” said Fire Chief Steve Dongworth. “Since 2019, the number of calls attended to by Calgary Fire in the station area increased over 130 per cent, and we only see that number growing. This station will be an important asset to the community for years to come.”
This project represents a collaborative effort between The City of Calgary Infrastructure Services, Calgary Fire Department, Waste & Recycling Services, and Chief Housing Office. The City of Calgary is committed to fostering a secure, vibrant, and thriving community where all residents feel safe and supported through strategic investments and strong partnerships.
