Statement from Premier Pemberton on the federal government’s major project announcements

“This is an exciting time for our country as Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled the first step toward a bold vision for Canada’s future.

“Here in the Yukon, we share that optimism. Our territory has huge potential and we are eager to work together with the rest of Canada to advance projects of national interest while ensuring Yukoners benefit.

“A critical part of this work is the Yukon-BC Grid Connect project, which will strengthen

energy infrastructure and support our communities and economy.

“The advancement of Grid Connect depends on BC completing their portion of the line and we know they are making good progress. While Grid Connect wasn’t included in the initial list of priorities, we are confident that this project will continue to advance. In the meantime, our government will continue to reduce risks and move forward with the significant investment of $40 million from the Government of Canada to advance feasibility work.

“Our government’s strong, positive relationship with Prime Minister Mark Carney and this federal government is a key part of this progress. It means we have the support and resources needed to advance projects that benefit Yukoners and all Canadians alike. We also have a strong partner in BC Premier David Eby and his government, guided by the Memorandum of Understanding that we signed earlier this year.

“With federal backing, we are well positioned to collaborate closely with the Major Projects Office and our partners to keep this project moving forward.

“We welcome the federal government’s commitment to building a stronger, more sustainable Canada. Yesterday’s announcement is a key step in advancing partnerships, supporting growth and securing a better future for all Canadians.

“This is a moment for all Canadians to come together, seize these opportunities and build a future that is strong, inclusive and resilient – for the north and the entire country.”
