An open-air gym in Conrad-Poirier Park

The borough of Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles is pleased to announce the opening of a brand new open-air gym at Conrad-Poirier Park.

This project, which was the result of a popular vote, was carried out as part of the second edition of the City of Montreal's participatory budget.

This new open-air gym is a great initiative that demonstrates our desire to make

physical activity accessible to all ages, directly in living environments. In addition to promoting health and well-being, this project contributes to strengthening the social fabric of our borough. I would like to pay tribute to the citizen mobilization that has made it possible.

After an analysis of several potential sites, Conrad-Poirier Park was selected because of its proximity to a dense population, its favourable topography, the available space and its complementarity with the sports facilities already present.

The facilities have been designed to meet the needs of all age groups, enrich the local sports offer and strengthen community ties. The RDP-PAT Youth Council, as well as professionals from the borough, were involved in the consultation process.

This project reflects the aspirations of young people in our neighbourhood: accessible, modern and inclusive spaces to move and find each other.

An amount of $650,000 was invested through the City of Montreal's participatory budget to make this project a reality.

Participatory budgeting is an essential lever for strengthening local democracy. It allows citizens to propose ideas that directly meet the needs of their community. This new open-air gym is a great example of this: an idea proposed by the population, which became a reality thanks to the commitment of several partners," says Magda Popeanu, responsible for organizational performance, citizen participation and democracy on the City of Montreal's executive committee.

The new developments include:

  • an asphalt pathway connecting Salomon-Marion and Lorenzo-Prince avenues;
  • solar street lights along the trail;
  • tree planting;
  • a small central square in cobblestones with picnic tables, bike rack, drinking fountain and mister
  • a weight training area (static equipment) on a rubber surface with a shelter of solar covers;
  • a course-type area on a wood fibre surface.

The borough invites the public to come and discover and enjoy these new facilities now.
