Investigation report into the death of the Granby girl - Statement from the National Director of Youth Protection

QUÉBEC CITYSept. 3, 2025 /CNW/ - Following the publication of the investigation report by the Office of the Coroner, Me Géhane Kamel, concerning the death of a young girl in Granby on April 30, 2019, the National Director of Youth Protection, Lesley Hill, issued the following statement:

"Since the terrible death of little Clara, we have been redoubling our efforts to constantly improve the protection of children. Several professionals gravitated around this little girl and her family, and yet, we collectively failed in our task to protect her from abuse. The observation is appalling, and the common wound is raw, even more than 6 years after his departure.

I promise this little girl that she will never be forgotten. I want her to know that we welcome Coroner Kamel's recommendations and that we are wholeheartedly committed to making a difference in order to avoid such a tragic fate for other children.

The Laurent Commission called for a real shift towards support services for families, in the community, and towards increased cooperation between all professionals in the lives of children, in order to ensure the necessary safety net. I pledge to work tirelessly on this issue. Mr. Kamel's report reminds us that we must go further, in particular by strengthening interdisciplinary and intersectoral work around families in vulnerable contexts.

These recommendations are a call to action, and a reminder of the collective responsibility and importance of working together to protect children, while ensuring close monitoring of risk situations and a very high level of rigour in child protection services. This is our mission and our duty. »
